metaSysX is both focused and diverse. We are proud of our scientific niche, which we actively help to mold every day. But at the same time, we are open to new directions and innovations.
Our array of products and services is constantly improved and expanded.
WORKFLOW
Samples are proofed and verified against our internal database.
SAMPLES PREPARATION
WEIGHING
EXTRACTION
DERIVATIZATION
WEIGHING
Samples are aliquoted evenly. Small deviations are not ignored: compound intensities are later normalized according to the recorded sample mass.
EXTRACTION
Our simple yet powerful extraction includes several steps of dissolution in specialized organic solvents and centrifugation.
DERIVATIZATION
For GC-MS analysis, non-volatile compounds become volatile by chemically attaching a small molecule (derivative) to the analyte.
GC-MS
LC-MS
GC-MS
Gas chromatography is most efficient at resolving smaller, volatile molecules. These include most primary metabolites.
LC-MS
Liquid chromatography is required for resolving mid-size to large molecules— although many small molecules are detected too—and for absolute quantification.

DATA FILTERING
DATA EXTRACTION
Our mass spectrometers output huge amounts of raw data. Highly specialized software is needed to translate the data into readable metabolite peaks.
DATA ALIGNMENT
Do different peaks from different samples correspond to the same compound? In this step this is verified. When necessary, shifts among the samples are calculated and the peaks are 'aligned'.
DATA ANNOTATION
The bread-and-butter of our workflow, the assignment of compound names to data signals is performed mostly automatically, supplanted with human oversight.
DATA FILTERING
In this final step superfluous, duplicate, or irrelevant data are removed.

UNIVARIATE AND/OR MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS
Our statisticians, under consideration of your requirements and the nature of the samples, experiments, and data, know just how to choose the tests and presentation appropriate for your needs.
MODELING
Your data can in many cases be used to predict a wide array of phenomena and to create novel products. Our modeling analysts can make your data walk the extra mile.
INTEGRATION
We offer the integration of your metabolomic data with various types of omic data, including in the form of correlation networks, in order to obtain a comprehensive overview of your system.
BIOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION
Our biologists will put your data within a biological context: biosynthetic pathways, organelles and cellular compartments, compound classes and the reactions that interconnect them—our interpretation will direct your focus on what matters and will save you days of tedious searches.
DATA DELIVERY
REPORT AND DATA
REPORT AND DATA
The entire data deriving from your samples is made available to you in several formats. Our standard report summarizes the results and provides a detailed Materials and Methods section to potentially include in your publication.
MASS SPECTROMETRY
Quantitative and semi-quantitative metabolite profiling. Feature annotation using internal database.
- Metabolomics
- Lipidomics
- Annotation
- Absolute and relative quantitation
- Pathway mapping
- Partial structure elucidation
DATA ANALYSIS
- Parametric and non-parametric unit-variate statistical tests: t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), etc.
- Principal component analysis (PCA).
- Clustering analysis: hierarchical clustering analysis, K - means, etc.
MODELING
Metabolite levels can be used to predict traits: biomass, growth rate, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, taste, appearance; to name but a few.
metaSysX, using sophisticated modeling algorithms developed in-house, can help define metabolic biomarkers and predict traits.
This is not only useful from a commercial point of view—increased yield and resistance in crops,
for instance—but also crucial for unraveling biological mechanisms in basic research.
DATA INTEGRATION
Transcriptomic, proteomic, and phenomic studies generate immense amounts of data.
At metaSysX we know precisely how to integrate your various datasets in a meaningful way.
AUTHENTICATION AND CERTIFICATION
Hidden ingredients, impurities, contaminants, obscure
origins: these plagues of the modern food industry can be
addressed at least in part thanks to the advent of highthroughput metabolomics.
Our dedicated analytical platform, comprehensive
database, and modeling methods allow an innovative
take on food-quality assurance. Origins, strains, and purity
can be authenticated; manufacturing procedures
monitored; and standard compliance verified.
